Start with where the sign goes

The material follows the location, not the other way round. This is the part most people get wrong.

On the footpath — an A-frame sign, frame plus two printed panels so it reads from both directions. Brisbane City Council regulates footpath signage, and neighbouring councils set their own rules on placement and clear footpath width. Check before you order. The budget A-frame uses corflute panels and suits a message that changes weekly; panels alone if you already have frames.

On the wall or window — PVC foam board. Rigid, waterproof, takes a screw. The more permanent option for shopfront signage and directory boards.

On a fence or a site — corflute. 5mm corrugated plastic, waterproof and UV stable, which matters through a Queensland summer, and cheap enough to replace when the job moves. This is the default across South East Queensland.

Out the front, seen from the road — feather or teardrop flags. Teardrops flap less, which matters in a Brisbane storm. Ground spike included; use a cross or water base on concrete.

Inside, at events — pull-up banners, media walls and printed table throws.

Around the shopfront — bollard covers turn the posts outside your door into advertising, and cafe barriers define an outdoor dining area.

Compliance signage

Site and safety signs are laid out to AS 1319, the Australian Standard. The colour and shape carry legal meaning — a danger sign is white on a red oval and is reserved for a hazard that will kill or seriously injure, while a warning sign is a yellow triangle. Using the wrong one is a compliance problem, not a styling choice.
